We have welcomed October with open arms here in Sandstone. Our play yard has been a place of wonderment over the week as we explored many ways to play with the leaves that have fallen. Earlier in the week there weren’t a ton of leaves on the ground, but every time the wind blew, the leaves would sprinkle down. Tilting their heads up, the children would spin with the falling leaves and crash down to the ground dizzily. As more and more leaves accumulated on the ground over the week we began to gather them into piles. Our search for the right tools lead us to find that anything with a long handle would do the trick. Using our tools we pushed, scooped, and dragged the leaves until we were satisfied that our pile was large enough. Large enough to do what? Well of course so that we could run through the leaves and kick them up into the air! We did a running jump so we could get enough air before we crashed into the huge pile. We also enjoyed covering our bodies in the leaves, loading up the wagons and transporting them around the yard, as well as tossing them in the air and letting them fall on us.
We had Storytime at the Manor this week! We read lots of books with Betty, James, and Maureen. Max and Audrey were cozying on up to our senior friend James while listening to him quietly.
This week in Sandstone we also have observed an interest in caring for the babies! We took turns washing the babies in the water table and Evelyn was careful as she diapered and wrapped the babies in blankets, while Estella, Susanna, and Cybil made beds for the babies. The children were so excited about their play that we bought (fake) baby bottles that we filled with liquids of different colours! This in turn generated interest in food play! We watched as Cybil filled her “grocery bag” with baby bottles and food!
We have also been exploring block play this week! We have experienced making Lego prints in playdough, we used different materials to build structures, and we also used our Lego to paint! Next week, Paulette will be creating a cardboard backdrop to inspire innovative architecture!
The children have been eager to go out everyday to play with the leaves, however we have definitely noticed the drop in temperature, especially in the mornings. Just a reminder to start layering up for the fall. Light mitts, a toque, a warm jacket, and the right shoes ensure that we can spend lots of time exploring the change in season.
PICTURE DAY is on Thursday October 13!!! If you would like to bring a change of clothes just let us know and we will make sure your child is in the chosen outfit.
Another long weekend is here, so be safe, have fun, and we will see you all on TUESDAY!!!
