“It’s sticky” or “look at my hands” were the exclamations coming from our sensory tables this week in Sandstone. With this colder weather we have been driven to stay indoors but our curiosity is on full blast with different textures and substances to explore. Last week we made playdough but when we went to use it again we found that it was too sticky, our playdough making experts were quick to find a solution to the problem, add more four! They carefully mixed and kneaded it into the mixture, squeezing and pushing with their fingers and hands building up those fine motor skills. How can you keep the goop (cornstarch and water) from slipping out of your fingers? This was something we tried to figure out as it slipped and slithered before we could make it into a shape, using the some spoons we found that if you keep moving the mixture it keeps a more sold form and if it stood still then it relaxed and slipped away. When we are fully engaged in exploring different substances sometimes we loose ourselves in play, I know in our sand table the children will sit there and scoop, dump, full, and scoop again all morning until most of the sand is on floor! The tell tale signs that we have been using all of our senses fo explore our surrounding is when by the end of the day we have paint on our shoes, cornstarch in our hair, our shoes are wet or our hair has come out of our pony. But that is okay because we are two and three and and for us learning through our play is the best way for our brains to develop and us to grow in our understanding of how things work. Have a great weekend and see you on Monday. Sandstone educators
