These last couple weeks in Quartz Room, we have observed many conversations among the children about camping. Two of the biggest words we are hearing the children discuss are the lake or as Felix likes to call it, “im going to the wake,” and fires. It is quite amazing to watch and listen as the children are connecting the idea that we use wood to make fire. They have now started to collect sticks from outside and inside and saying “make fire?” So with these interests in mind, we were trying to come up with an idea for a Father’s Day gift that would be inclusive to the children and helpful for the dads! That’s when Kerry said “we could make home made fire starters!” What a fun process it has been to make these gifts. First we had to go out on an collecting adventure and find as many pine cones as we could, then we took the pine cones and placed them into egg cartons. The children were so helpful for this process, they didn’t need any type of direction, they just started placing the pine cones right into the egg cartons. Next we melted candles down and poured the wax over top of the pine cones and cut up the egg cartons into individual pieces. During the whole process we had great talks with the children about how the fire starters work and that you can take these with you when you go camping with mom and dad. We hope you enjoy them! On that note, we leave you with one simple question to ponder over the weekend… Camping is always the answer… Who cares what the question is. Have a Happy Fathers Day!! 🙂
