This week in Quartz Room we have been bringing our classroom to the outdoors, especially our art experiences. We started out simple by bringing out our playdough and exploring it on the picnic table outside, next we started adding materials such as rollers and playdough scissors. The next activity we set up was spray painting, this included a large piece of paper and spray bottles full of paint, soap and water. We taped the large piece of paper to the fence outside and encouraged the children to use the spray bottles. At first the children sprayed the paper from a far distance which made more of a misting misting, splatter mark. Then they noticed if they sprayed from a closer distance, the paint would go on thicker and started to slide down the paper making the colours mix together which created new colors. This activity lasted for a whole hour, the children were so wonderful at sharing, some of the Jasper children came over and helped teach our children how to use the spray bottles properly. We found out though that the paper we were using was too thin, because before long the paper started to get holes in it. The paint soaked right through, next time we try this activity we are going to see if a canvas will have the same effect. It’s incredible how easy and fun it is to bring the classroom outside, nature has so much to teach us and is really like an extra educator to the room. Benefits of the Outdoor Classroom
