This week we have been enjoying the sunshine! Yesterday, we went out for a walk around the backyard. It’s interesting how the children carefully observed what was around them. They stopped and explored the rocks, wooden sticks, plants that they’d seen during our walk. When they saw the flowers by the seniors’ backyard, they quickly said out loud their various colours, “Pink! Yellow! Purple!” It is truly amazing how the children notice the details of their surroundings. They were “playfully exploring and investigating the properties of objects” and “testing their powers of observation and sensory discrimination” (PPP, p. 100). They picked up wooden sticks and carried them as we walked. It seemed as though they were exploring the as well as enjoying just having them to hold on to. We stopped by the hills on the side of the building and felt the wind touch our faces as we ran up and down, then up and down the green hills! We observed the plants that were around us then again, ran up and down the hills! We were so engaged in that experience. It was wonderful! Also, this week, we have been so immersed in playing in our new sandbox! We would scoop some sand then pour it right back in the box. We’d roll our dumptrucks on it, flatten the sand using any material we could find- bottom of the bowls or pails. We just want to stay outside more now! We would even sing “Oh Mr. Sun!” We truly love the sunshine!!
